Je Naaste: Interactive art installation

Posted on October 24th, 2010

Together with Els Engel I helped Roberta Petzoldt with her graduation project for the Gerrit Rietveld Academy here in Amsterdam. We build the technical part. The installation works as follows: There is a setup with from left to right: spotlight, chair, translucent projection surface, beamer. When you sit on this chair there appears a person in your shadow. This is Roberta and she starts to read you a poem after a couple of seconds.

Je Naaste

The chair is equipped with a pressure sensor underneath one of its legs. I used an Arduino to get the feedback from the sensor. The Arduino – connected to a computer – was read out by a program that we build in OpenFrameworks (an open source coding environment based on C++). The computer had to play a high-res video file as soon as a person sat on the chair. This video of an other person sitting on a chair was then projected exactly in your shade. At first I tried this with Processing (a Java based coding software) but we had some inexplicable phenomenon using this platform. So we switched to OpenFrameworks which is stronger than the Java based Processing.
